Overview

Pistacia lentiscus aqueous leaf extract is a water-based extract prepared from the leaves of the Mediterranean shrub Pistacia lentiscus L. It contains a complex mixture of hydrophilic phytochemicals, including polyphenols (notably catechingallate and epigallocatechin gallate), flavonoids, and phenolic acids[3][1]. The extract displays potent antioxidant activities (notably via DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays), competitive inhibition of the carbohydrate-digesting enzyme alpha-amylase (which may attenuate postprandial blood glucose excursions), inhibition of advanced glycation end-product (AGE) formation, and anti-inflammatory actions via preservation of cellular thiol groups and inhibition of oxidative stress[1][3][4][5]. The extract also demonstrates antibacterial properties (with stronger effects against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, and weaker effects against certain Gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa)[3][2]. The mechanism of its antidiabetic effect is primarily through inhibition of alpha-amylase and possibly alpha-glucosidase, reducing the rate of carbohydrate digestion and glucose release[1][4]. Its anti-glycation effect protects against protein modification and cellular damage associated with diabetes-related complications[1].
