Overview

Pituitrin is a proprietary name for an extract of bovine posterior pituitary hormones, primarily containing oxytocin and vasopressin. Historically, it was used in obstetrics to induce labor and treat postpartum hemorrhage due to the uterotonic effects of oxytocin and the vasoconstrictive properties of vasopressin. In addition to its use in obstetrics, it has been employed as a vasopressor in perioperative management for conditions such as pulmonary hypertension and massive hemoptysis. The mechanism of action involves stimulation of uterine smooth muscle contraction (oxytocin) and constriction of systemic blood vessels (vasopressin), leading to increased systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure[1][2][3][6]. Pituitrin has largely been replaced by purified or synthetic preparations but may still be encountered in some clinical settings.
