Overview

Pivhydrazine is an irreversible and non-selective monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) of the hydrazine family. It was introduced in the 1960s as an oral antidepressant but has since been discontinued. Its mechanism of action involves covalent binding to monoamine oxidases (MAO), leading to inhibition of these enzymes and resulting in increased levels of monoamine neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain. This elevation in neurotransmitter levels was intended to alleviate symptoms of depression. Pivhydrazine was marketed under several brand names including Tersavid and Angorvid[1][2][3][5].
