Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PKB-171 is a preclinical-stage small molecule therapeutic being developed by Prokrea for the treatment of mild male factor infertility and sperm motility impairment. It consists of a repositioned formulation of pentoxifylline, delivered as a post-coital vaginal gel. Pentoxifylline acts as a non-selective phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which increases intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). In the context of infertility, this mechanism enhances sperm motility and metabolic activity, potentially facilitating fertilization by improving the ability of sperm to reach and penetrate the egg within the female reproductive tract.
