Overview

PL-8331 is a peptide-based pan-melanocortin receptor agonist developed by Palatin Technologies. As a synthetic analog of α-Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (α-MSH), it exhibits high affinity for melanocortin receptors, specifically MC1R and MC5R, with a significantly longer half-life than the endogenous peptide. The drug is designed to leverage the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of the melanocortin system to treat ocular inflammatory conditions. Currently in preclinical development, PL-8331 has shown potential in treating dry eye disease, uveitis, and diabetic retinopathy by suppressing retinal inflammation, preventing retinal degeneration, and preserving the function of retinal pigment epithelial cells.
