Overview

The combination of **placebo + acetylcysteine** refers to a specific experimental arm in a pilot clinical trial (NCT01384591) sponsored by the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. In this study, healthy elderly subjects (ages 60–85) received active N-acetylcysteine (NAC) at a dose of 50 mg/kg alongside a placebo for losartan. N-acetylcysteine is a small molecule antioxidant and a precursor to glutathione, a critical endogenous antioxidant. The research investigated whether NAC could improve skeletal muscle blood flow and reduce fatigue, addressing age-related declines in nutritive muscle perfusion and muscle-building capacity (sarcopenia risk). By replenishing glutathione levels, NAC aims to mitigate oxidative stress pathways that contribute to muscle dysfunction in aging populations.
