The combination of placebo and docetaxel refers to a control regimen used in clinical trials, specifically in a Phase 2 study (NCT01362400) conducted by Infinity Pharmaceuticals for patients with previously treated Stage IIIB or IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Docetaxel is a taxane-based chemotherapy agent that acts as a microtubule stabilizer; it binds to tubulin, promoting its assembly into microtubules and inhibiting their disassembly. This action leads to cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and induces apoptosis. In the context of the Infinity Pharmaceuticals trial, this regimen served as the standard-of-care comparator against which the efficacy of adding the heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) inhibitor retaspimycin (IPI-504) was evaluated. The trial results indicated that the addition of retaspimycin did not significantly improve overall survival compared to the placebo plus docetaxel arm.
