This combination represents the control arm in a Phase II randomized, double-blind clinical trial (NCT00774813) conducted by Kalaco Scientific to evaluate Nexalin transcranial electrical stimulation therapy. It consists of a sham (placebo) Nexalin device used in conjunction with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) citalopram. Citalopram is a small molecule antidepressant that works by inhibiting the serotonin transporter (SERT), thereby increasing synaptic serotonin levels in the brain. The sham device is designed to mimic the physical application of the Nexalin therapy without delivering active electrical stimulation, serving as a comparator to determine if active electrical stimulation provides additional therapeutic benefit over standard SSRI medication alone in patients with mild to moderate depression.
