Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This placebo gel is an inactive topical formulation developed by Watson Pharmaceuticals for use as a control in clinical trials evaluating oxybutynin chloride topical gel (Gelnique). It was specifically designed to match the physical properties, including appearance and application method, of the active oxybutynin gel to maintain the blinding of study participants and investigators. In clinical research, such as Phase 1 studies assessing gastric emptying via the acetaminophen absorption test, this placebo served as the negative comparator to isolate the pharmacological effects of the active antimuscarinic agent on bladder smooth muscle and other physiological processes.
