The placebo vehicle control cream is an inactive topical formulation used as the comparator arm in the Basal Cell Carcinoma Chemoprevention Trial (B3C), also known as VA CSP #2019. Developed by the VA Office of Research and Development, this cream is designed to be physically identical to 5% Imiquimod cream in appearance, texture, and application method but contains no active pharmaceutical ingredient. In the context of the Phase 3 multicenter trial, it is applied daily to the face for 12 weeks to evaluate the efficacy of Imiquimod in preventing the development of new basal cell carcinomas (BCC) in high-risk Veterans. The primary goal of using this vehicle control is to establish a baseline for BCC incidence and safety over a three-year follow-up period.
