Overview

Placenta-derived autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a specialized cell therapy product being investigated for the treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infants. These cells are isolated from the infant's own placenta at birth, expanded in a controlled laboratory environment, and subsequently administered to the infant. The therapeutic rationale is based on the MSCs' ability to migrate to sites of injury and secrete a variety of bioactive molecules, including anti-inflammatory cytokines and pro-angiogenic factors, which help to mitigate lung inflammation and promote the repair of alveolar and vascular structures. This autologous approach minimizes the risk of immunological rejection. Clinical development is primarily led by the Army Medical Center of PLA (Daping Hospital) in China.
