Placenta-derived gp96 injection is an experimental biologic therapy being investigated for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). gp96, also known as heat shock protein 90 kDa beta member 1 (HSP90B1) or glucose-regulated protein 94 (GRP94), is a molecular chaperone located in the endoplasmic reticulum that plays a critical role in protein folding and the cellular stress response. In the context of ALS, this placenta-derived formulation is hypothesized to exert neuroprotective effects and modulate the immune system to slow disease progression. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 0 clinical trial in China to assess safety and preliminary efficacy, with a focus on clinical symptom changes and immunological laboratory markers.
