Overview

Placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (PMSC-EVs) are nanoscale membrane-bound particles secreted by mesenchymal stem cells isolated from human placental tissue. These vesicles contain a variety of bioactive molecules, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids (such as mRNA and microRNA), which mediate intercellular communication and modulate biological processes. PMSC-EVs are being investigated as a novel cell-free therapeutic modality due to their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties that mimic the paracrine effects of their parent MSCs. They have been studied in preclinical models for neuroprotection, myelin preservation, anti-inflammatory effects, and tissue regeneration. In clinical settings, PMSC-EVs have been evaluated for safety in conditions such as knee osteoarthritis; results indicate they are safe but did not show significant efficacy over placebo in improving symptoms or MRI findings within six months post-injection[1][4]. The mechanism of action is believed to involve modulation of immune responses and promotion of tissue repair through delivery of regulatory RNAs and proteins[5].
