Overview

Placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PLMSCs) are an investigational allogeneic cell therapy being developed by the Tehran University of Medical Sciences for the treatment of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). These cells are isolated from donated human placental tissue and administered via intravenous infusion. The therapy is designed to utilize the innate immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties of mesenchymal stem cells to reduce neuroinflammation and promote tissue repair in the central nervous system. A Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT06360861) is currently evaluating the safety, tolerability, and exploratory efficacy of a single dose of PLMSCs in adult patients with SPMS who are also receiving rituximab.
