Placenta-derived stem cells (PDSC) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by Michael H. Carstens for the treatment of chronic diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and peripheral neuropathy. These cells are typically isolated from placental tissue and may be administered as a stromal vascular fraction (SVF) containing mesenchymal stem cells and other progenitor populations. The therapeutic approach involves local injection into the soft tissues of the lower limb, including the ulcer bed and along distal arterial vessels. PDSCs are thought to exert their effects through paracrine signaling, promoting angiogenesis, modulating inflammation, and supporting tissue regeneration, which collectively aim to improve wound healing and potentially restore sensory perception in patients with diabetic complications.
