Overview

Placenta polypeptide refers to a biologic preparation derived from the hydrolysis or extraction of peptides and proteins from mammalian (often human or sheep) placental tissue. These preparations contain essential amino acids, active peptides, proteins, and lipid fatty acids[1]. Placenta polypeptides have been used in injectable form for various therapeutic purposes including fatigue reduction and support of mitochondrial function. Mechanistically, studies suggest that these peptides may protect against mitochondrial dysfunction by inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), maintaining mitochondrial dynamics, and increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6[3]. Clinical use has been associated with a favorable safety profile; adverse events are rare and generally mild[1]. The primary indications include chronic fatigue syndrome/fatigue-related conditions; other uses under investigation include metabolic disorders.
