Placenta polypeptides are heterogeneous mixtures of low–molecular weight peptides, amino acids, proteins, lipids, and growth and immune factors enzymatically or hydrolytically extracted from human placenta and formulated as injectable biologic preparations, most widely used in China as placental polypeptide injections. Pharmacological and preclinical studies suggest these extracts provide trophic and immunomodulatory effects, including support of protein synthesis, metabolism, tissue repair, and wound and bone healing, likely via combined actions of bioactive peptides, somatomedin/IGF-like activities, cytokines, and other placental factors rather than a single defined molecular target.[8][9] Clinically, placental polypeptide injections have been used as adjunctive therapy for a range of conditions such as pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic viral hepatitis B and C, and other chronic or debilitating diseases, with large post‑marketing surveillance data in China indicating a low adverse drug reaction rate and generally favorable short‑term safety profile.[5][8][9]
