The placental malaria vaccine being developed by AdaptVac and the ADVANCE-VAC4PM consortium is a multivalent, virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccine designed to protect pregnant women and their fetuses from *Plasmodium falciparum* infection. Utilizing AdaptVac's capsid VLP (cVLP) technology, the vaccine incorporates multiple antigens to target different stages of the malaria parasite's life cycle: VAR2CSA to prevent sequestration in the placenta, CSP (circumsporozoite protein) to block liver-stage infection, Pf48/45 to inhibit transmission to mosquitoes, and CIDRα1 to prevent severe disease. This comprehensive approach aims to provide robust immunity against placental malaria, which is a major cause of maternal anemia, stillbirth, and low birth weight. The program is currently in preclinical development with support from EU funding.
