Placental mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes are extracellular vesicles secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from human placental tissue. These nano-sized vesicles function as cell-free therapeutic agents that encapsulate and transport a variety of bioactive molecules, including proteins, lipids, and specific microRNAs (such as hsa-let-7i-5p, miR-143, and miR-139-5p). They mediate intercellular communication and exert potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and pro-regenerative effects. By modulating critical signaling pathways—such as the NF-κB, MAPK, and PTEN/AKT pathways—these exosomes are being investigated for their ability to repair tissue damage in conditions like acute lung injury, intrauterine adhesions, chemotherapy-induced ovarian dysfunction, and spinal cord injury. They are also utilized in regenerative aesthetics for skin biostimulation and can serve as specialized drug delivery vehicles for natural compounds like berberine.
