Overview

Plaivana is a topical herbal cream containing a 14% extract of Plai (*Zingiber cassumunar* Roxb.), a plant in the ginger family traditionally used in Thai medicine. The product is standardized to contain active compounds such as (E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl) butadiene (DMPBD), sabinene, and terpinen-4-ol. It exhibits potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity, suppressing nitric oxide (NO) production, and scavenging reactive oxygen species like hydrogen peroxide. Plaivana is primarily indicated for the symptomatic relief of pain associated with knee osteoarthritis and acute musculoskeletal injuries such as athletic ankle sprains, offering a topical alternative to systemic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
