Overview

Plant stanol ester is a dietary compound formed by the esterification of plant-derived stanols (phytostanols) with fatty acids. It is used primarily as a functional food ingredient to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood. Plant stanol esters work by competitively inhibiting the absorption of dietary and biliary cholesterol in the intestine, thereby reducing plasma LDL cholesterol concentrations. They are minimally absorbed themselves and pass through the gut largely unchanged. The typical effective dose for LDL reduction is 2–3 grams per day, which can lower LDL cholesterol by about 10–15%. Plant stanol esters are commonly incorporated into foods such as margarine spreads (notably Benecol), dairy products, and cereals[4][5][8]. Their use has been shown to be safe over long periods and they are especially recommended for individuals seeking non-pharmaceutical options for managing hypercholesterolemia[4][8]. However, they should not be used by individuals with sitosterolemia or certain rare metabolic conditions[5].
