Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Plantago decoction is a botanical extract mouthwash derived from *Plantago major* L. (broadleaf plantain), developed by the Institut Català d'Oncologia (ICO) for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. Formulated at a 5% concentration with potassium chlorate as an excipient, the preparation leverages the traditional medicinal plant's anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. It was evaluated in a Phase III randomized, triple-blind trial in solid tumor patients to reduce the severity of grade II–III mucositis, pain intensity, and improve quality of life. However, the trial did not demonstrate superiority over standard treatments like sodium bicarbonate or chlorhexidine.
