Plantago major extract is a botanical extract derived from the leaves of the *Plantago major* plant, commonly known as broadleaf plantain. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Indonesia, for treating inflammatory conditions, wounds, and infections. Scientific investigation has demonstrated that specific fractions of the extract, such as the n-hexane-insoluble fraction (IPM/IHF), possess potent anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatoid arthritis properties. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Additionally, the extract suppresses leukocyte migration and inhibits osteoclast formation, which helps prevent joint destruction.
