Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Plantago ovata seed ethanol extract is an ethanolic preparation derived from the seeds of Plantago ovata (commonly known as psyllium). This botanical extract contains a high concentration of polyphenols and flavonoids, with lower levels of condensed tannins. It has demonstrated multiple pharmacological activities in preclinical studies, including antioxidant, antiulcerogenic, antimicrobial, wound healing, antidiarrheal, and laxative effects. The mechanism of action is primarily attributed to its antioxidant properties—scavenging free radicals and enhancing endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)—as well as modulation of gastrointestinal motility via muscarinic and 5-HT receptor activation. In animal models, it has shown protective effects against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers by reducing ulcer index values and preserving gastric mucosa integrity[3]. Additional reported benefits include improved wound healing rates compared to standard treatments[2], antimicrobial activity against certain pathogens[4], cholesterol-lowering effects[4], blood sugar regulation[4], constipation relief through increased stool weight/reduced transit time[3][2], anti-diarrheal action at higher doses[2][4], and potential use as a natural pharmaceutical excipient due to its mucilage content.
