Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Plantain decoction is a botanical preparation derived from the medicinal plant *Plantago major* (commonly known as llantén). It is utilized for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and emollient properties, specifically for the symptomatic treatment of oral mucositis in oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy. The preparation acts by modulating the inflammatory cascade, targeting nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), nitric oxide (NO), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and leukotriene B4 (LTB4). It was evaluated by the Institut Català d'Oncologia in a Phase III clinical trial as a mouthwash, though it did not demonstrate superiority over standard treatments like sodium bicarbonate or chlorhexidine.
