Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Plantain seed, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Che Qian Zi (Semen Plantaginis), refers to the dried mature seeds of *Plantago asiatica* L. or *Plantago depressa* Willd. Traditionally utilized for its diuretic, heat-clearing, and expectorant properties, it is increasingly investigated for its potential in managing metabolic syndrome components. Clinical research, particularly pilot studies conducted in China, has explored its efficacy in treating type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. The pharmacological activity is attributed to a variety of bioactive constituents, including polysaccharides, phenylethanoid glycosides (such as acteoside), and iridoids (such as aucubin). These components are believed to exert hypoglycemic effects by potentially inhibiting alpha-glucosidase activity and improving insulin sensitivity, while its diuretic properties contribute to blood pressure regulation.
