Overview

Plasma-activated normal saline (PAS) is an experimental therapeutic liquid produced by exposing sterile 0.9% sodium chloride solution to cold atmospheric plasma (CAP). This process generates a variety of long-lived reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), including hydrogen peroxide, nitrites, and nitrates, which exert selective anti-tumor effects by inducing oxidative stress and subsequent apoptosis in malignant cells. Developed by researchers at The First Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Medical University, PAS is being investigated as an intravesical perfusion therapy for patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) following transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). The treatment aims to eliminate residual cancer cells and reduce recurrence rates through a localized, oxidative mechanism of action.
