Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Plasma-Lyte 148 and 5% Glucose is a sterile, isotonic, calcium-free crystalloid intravenous infusion solution developed and manufactured by Baxter. It is composed of a physiologically balanced mixture of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate) combined with 5% dextrose (glucose) as an active energy substrate. The solution is designed to match the osmolality and electrolyte profile of human plasma, thereby avoiding the hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis associated with 0.9% sodium chloride and the iatrogenic hyponatremia associated with hypotonic maintenance fluids. It does not act on a specific molecular biological target in the traditional pharmacological sense; rather, it functions as a fluid replacement, electrolyte replenishment, and caloric support agent. It is primarily indicated for the treatment or prevention of dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and to provide immediate caloric support in hospitalized pediatric and adult patients requiring intravenous fluid therapy.
