Overview

Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF), also referred to in some clinical contexts as PGRF, is an autologous biologic therapy derived from a patient's own blood. It consists of a concentrated preparation of platelets that, upon activation, release a variety of growth factors including PDGF, TGF-beta, and VEGF. Meir Medical Center has evaluated this therapy for the treatment of acute ankle sprains, specifically anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) tears in athletes. The treatment is administered via ultrasound-guided injection directly into the injured ligament to stimulate tissue regeneration and accelerate the healing process. Clinical trial data indicates that PRGF significantly reduces return-to-play time and residual pain compared to standard saline placebos, making it a promising regenerative modality for sports-related ligamentous injuries.
