Plasmalyte is a family of sterile, nonpyrogenic isotonic crystalloid solutions formulated to closely mimic the electrolyte composition and pH of human plasma. The most common formulations (such as Plasma-Lyte A and Plasma-Lyte 148) contain sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, sodium acetate trihydrate, and sodium gluconate dissolved in water for injection. These solutions are used intravenously as sources of water and electrolytes for fluid replacement in clinical situations such as burns, trauma (including hemorrhagic shock), surgery (intraoperative fluid replacement), infection with peritoneal irritation or sepsis requiring rapid volume expansion or correction of metabolic acidosis. Plasmalyte provides an alkalinizing effect due to its content of acetate and gluconate anions which are metabolized to bicarbonate. It is compatible with blood products for transfusion purposes[1][2][3][4][5][6].
