Overview

Plasmodium falciparum 7G8 (MCB-004) is a clinical-grade, cultured blood-stage malaria parasite cell bank developed by the Institute for Glycomics at Griffith University. It is utilized as a challenge agent in Controlled Human Malaria Infection (CHMI) studies to assess the efficacy of malaria vaccines and therapeutic interventions. The 7G8 strain is a Brazilian isolate that is genetically distinct from the commonly used West African PfNF54 strain, making it a valuable tool for testing heterologous protection. It consists of live parasitized red blood cells and is primarily used to model natural infection and characterize host immune responses in malaria-naive adults. Additionally, the strain has been used in research involving chemically attenuated parasite vaccine candidates.
