Overview

A standardized biological preparation consisting of viable *Plasmodium falciparum*-infected human erythrocytes used to induce controlled malaria infections in healthy volunteers. This malaria inoculum is a key component of Induced Blood Stage Malaria (IBSM) clinical trials, which are used to evaluate the efficacy of new antimalarial candidates, vaccines, and transmission-blocking interventions. Developed and utilized by the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), the inoculum (often containing approximately 2,800 viable parasites) is administered intravenously. This allows researchers to study the parasite's life cycle, including the transition to sexual stages (gametocytes) and their subsequent infectivity to mosquitoes, in a highly controlled environment.
