Plasmodium falciparum NF54 sporozoites are the infective stage of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, specifically from the NF54 strain, which are transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. These sporozoites are a critical component in the development of malaria vaccines and research tools. For instance, the PfSPZ Vaccine utilizes radiation-attenuated NF54 sporozoites that are metabolically active but non-replicating, designed to induce a protective immune response against malaria by preventing the parasite from completing its life cycle in the liver. Conversely, PfSPZ Challenge consists of fully infectious NF54 sporozoites used in controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) studies to evaluate vaccine efficacy and antimalarial drugs. The primary indication for vaccine formulations is the prevention of malaria.
