Overview

Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites are the infectious stage of the *Plasmodium falciparum* parasite, responsible for causing malaria. In a therapeutic context, they are utilized as a vaccine or for controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) studies. The sporozoites are typically aseptic, purified, cryopreserved, and metabolically active, but rendered non-replicating through radiation attenuation (PfRAS) or chemoattenuation (PfSPZ-CVac) to prevent full-blown infection while still eliciting a protective immune response. This approach aims to induce cellular and humoral immunity to confer protection against *P. falciparum* infection, serving as a vaccine candidate for malaria prevention.
