Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PlasProtecT is a whole-parasite blood-stage malaria vaccine candidate developed by researchers at Griffith University's Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics. Unlike subunit vaccines that target single polymorphic proteins or sporozoite-stage vaccines (such as RTS,S and R21) that target the liver stage, PlasProtecT contains the entire complement of over 5,000 malaria parasite proteins from the asexual blood stage of *Plasmodium falciparum*. The vaccine is designed to stimulate a broad, strain-transcending CD4+ T-cell-dependent immune response that targets the blood-stage merozoites, which are responsible for the clinical symptoms and pathology of malaria. The vaccine formulation has been optimized to be freeze-dried or frozen into a stable powder, allowing for easier transport and storage in remote, resource-limited endemic regions without losing efficacy. It is formulated with adjuvants such as CAF01 and alum to enhance immunogenicity.
