Overview
Platanus acerifolia pollen allergen extract is a biological product developed by Bial Industrial Farmacéutica S.A. (Bial-Arístegui) for the treatment of IgE-mediated allergic conditions. Derived from the pollen of the London plane tree (sycamore), the extract contains key allergenic proteins such as Pla a 1 (an 18 kDa invertase inhibitor-related protein) and Pla a 2 (a polygalacturonase). It is used in allergen immunotherapy (AIT) to desensitize patients suffering from allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, and seasonal pollen allergies. The extract's potency is standardized using biological units (HEP) determined through skin prick testing planimetry, which measures the modulation of the allergic immune response in sensitized individuals.
