Overview

Platanus occidentalis pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the American sycamore tree (Platanus occidentalis). [9] It is utilized for both the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions (allergies) to this specific pollen. [2] For diagnostic purposes, it is administered via percutaneous or intradermal skin tests to elicit a localized allergic reaction, confirming sensitivity. [2] For therapeutic use, it is a key component of allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots), where gradually increasing doses are administered subcutaneously to desensitize the immune system and reduce the allergic response over time. [2, 3] This biological extract is manufactured by companies including Greer Laboratories, Inc. and is available as a single-allergen solution or as part of tree pollen mixtures. [9, 13]
