Overview

Platanus racemosa pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the California sycamore tree. [5-1, 9, 12] It is used for both the diagnosis and treatment (immunotherapy) of individuals with immediate hypersensitivity allergies to this specific pollen. [5-4] For diagnostic purposes, it is applied via skin testing (percutaneous or intradermal routes) to elicit a localized allergic reaction, characterized by histamine release, in sensitized patients. [5-1, 5-5] As a therapeutic agent, it is administered subcutaneously to desensitize the immune system over time, a process which is believed to involve the induction of cell-mediated immunity and an increase in the production of specific IgG antibodies that can block the allergic response. [5-1, 5-5] The product is manufactured and distributed by Greer Laboratories, Inc. (now Stallergenes Greer) and is approved under a Biologic License Application (BLA). [4-2, 4-3, 5-5]
