Platelet-derived growth factor AB (PDGF-AB) is a dimeric glycoprotein composed of disulfide-bonded A and B polypeptide chains. It functions as a potent growth factor, regulating diverse cellular processes including cell growth, division, proliferation, differentiation, migration, and survival. PDGF-AB exerts its biological effects by binding to and activating specific receptor tyrosine kinases, namely the Platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRα) and Platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta (PDGFRβ). This activation initiates signal transduction pathways that are crucial for various physiological roles, such as embryonic development, wound healing, angiogenesis (blood vessel formation), and general tissue repair. It is particularly known to promote neuronal survival and recruit glial cells, and acts as a mitogen for mesenchymal cells like fibroblasts, glial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells.
