Overview

Platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) is a biologically active, dimeric protein composed of two B chains from the PDGF family. It acts as a potent mitogen and chemoattractant for cells of mesenchymal origin, including fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. PDGF-BB binds to the platelet-derived growth factor receptor (primarily PDGFR-beta), activating intracellular signaling pathways that regulate cell proliferation, migration, survival, and differentiation. It plays essential roles in embryonic development, angiogenesis, wound healing, tissue repair, and vascular remodeling. Recombinant forms of PDGF-BB are produced for research purposes and have been investigated clinically for their regenerative properties in chronic wounds (such as diabetic ulcers), bone fractures, periodontal defects, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease[2][4][5][6][8]. The mechanism involves stimulation of cellular processes critical to tissue regeneration.
