Overview

Platelet-derived mitochondria (pl-MT) are isolated mitochondria obtained from platelets, used as a therapeutic agent in mitochondrial transplantation. In the context of endometriosis, pl-MT transplantation aims to modulate the inflammatory microenvironment by shifting macrophage polarization from a pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype toward a less inflammatory state. This process involves the restoration of mitochondrial function, promoting oxidative phosphorylation over aerobic glycolysis (the Warburg effect), and suppressing fibrosis and inflammation in ectopic endometrial tissue. Research indicates that these transplanted mitochondria can maintain structural integrity and membrane potential, biodistribute to target tissues, and significantly reduce lesion volume.
