Overview

Platelet lysate is an acellular, protein-rich biologic derived from the lysis of human platelets. It contains a concentrated mix of growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, and proteins that play key roles in tissue repair and regeneration. Platelet lysate is produced by breaking open platelets (typically via freeze-thaw cycles), which releases their contents while removing cellular debris and surface antigens to minimize immunogenicity[2][6]. The resulting solution is rich in growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and others[5][6]. These components stimulate cell proliferation, angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, differentiation of stem cells into target tissues like bone or cartilage, and reduce inflammation[1][4][5]. Platelet lysate has been investigated for use in regenerative medicine for conditions including musculoskeletal injuries, osteoarthritis, oral mucositis, radicular pain syndromes, alopecia, acute lung injury/ARDS/COVID-19-related respiratory distress syndrome[1][2], as well as for enhancing stem cell culture expansion ex vivo[3]. Its mechanism centers on providing a high local concentration of bioactive molecules that promote healing without the pro-inflammatory effects sometimes seen with other blood-derived products like PRP.
