Platelet poor plasma (PPP) is an autologous biologic therapy derived from the centrifugation of a patient's whole blood, resulting in a plasma fraction with a low concentration of platelets. In the multi-modal treatment protocol developed by Regenexx, LLC for degenerative disc disease (DDD), PPP is used in conjunction with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet lysate (PL). Specifically, PPP is injected into the multifidus muscles to address muscle atrophy and support the stability of the functional spinal unit. This approach aims to treat the comprehensive pathology of DDD, including disc degeneration, facet joint arthropathy, and associated muscular weakness. The therapy is currently being evaluated in randomized, sham-controlled clinical trials to determine its efficacy in reducing pain and improving function in patients who have failed conservative treatments.
