Overview

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) combined with minocycline is an adjunctive therapeutic intervention used in non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) for the treatment of periodontitis. PRF is an autologous, second-generation platelet concentrate derived from the patient's own blood, forming a fibrin matrix that contains high concentrations of platelets, leucocytes, and essential growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These components facilitate tissue healing and regeneration. Minocycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic that provides antimicrobial activity against periodontal pathogens. In this combination, the PRF matrix serves as a biologic scaffold and a local delivery system for the antibiotic, aiming to resolve inflammation and reduce periodontal pocket depth more effectively than standard scaling and root planing alone. This specific combination is being evaluated by the Center for Advanced Rejuvenation and Esthetics in randomized clinical trials.
