Overview

This regenerative therapy approach, investigated at King Abdulaziz University, combines autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) with synthetic nanohydroxyapatite (nano-HA) for the treatment of intrabony defects in patients with chronic periodontitis. PRF is a second-generation platelet concentrate prepared from the patient's own blood via centrifugation, resulting in a fibrin matrix rich in platelets, leukocytes, and various growth factors, most notably vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Nanohydroxyapatite is a bioactive, synthetic bone graft material that provides an osteoconductive scaffold. When used in combination, the PRF acts as a reservoir for growth factors that stimulate angiogenesis and tissue repair, while the nanohydroxyapatite supports the formation of new bone, collectively promoting the regeneration of lost periodontal tissues.
