Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane is an autologous biological scaffold derived from the patient's own blood through centrifugation. Developed and studied by researchers at Al-Mustansiriyah University, this second-generation platelet concentrate is used in oral and maxillofacial surgery to enhance bone regeneration and soft tissue healing. The PRF membrane consists of a dense fibrin matrix that sequesters platelets, leucocytes, and a variety of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). When applied to dental implant sites, it serves as a reservoir for the sustained release of these bioactive molecules, promoting osseointegration, increasing bone dimensions, and improving the thickness of the keratinized mucosa.
