Overview

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane is an autologous biologic material used in regenerative dentistry and oral surgery. It is prepared chairside from the patient's own blood through a single-step centrifugation process without the addition of anticoagulants or bovine thrombin. The resulting fibrin matrix traps platelets, leukocytes, and cytokines, acting as a scaffold that provides a sustained release of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In the context of clinical research at Kafrelsheikh University, it is being evaluated for its efficacy in improving the periodontal phenotype—specifically gingival thickness and the width of keratinized tissue—around dental implants in the upper anterior region, compared to fascia lata allografts and subepithelial connective tissue grafts.
