Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biological therapy prepared by concentrating platelets from a patient's own peripheral blood. Upon activation, these platelets release a variety of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which facilitate tissue repair and modulate inflammatory processes. In a Phase 3 clinical trial led by the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, PRP is being evaluated as an intralesional injection for the treatment of early-stage trigger finger disorder (stenosing tenosynovitis) in Black adults, aiming to provide a regenerative alternative to the current standard of care, corticosteroid injections like Depo-Medrol.
