Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biological therapy produced by concentrating platelets from a patient's own peripheral blood. In the context of clinical research at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, PRP is prepared using the Biomet Biologics Recover Platelet Separation Kit and administered via subacromial injection for the treatment of shoulder subacromial impingement syndrome. The therapeutic effect is mediated by the degranulation of alpha-granules in the concentrated platelets, which releases a variety of growth factors—including PDGF, TGF-β, and VEGF—into the local environment. These factors stimulate cellular proliferation, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling, aiming to accelerate healing and reduce inflammation in the subacromial space compared to traditional corticosteroid injections.
