Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy consisting of a concentrated fraction of the patient's own plasma with a platelet count above baseline. In a clinical study led by Cairo University, PRP was evaluated as an adjunctive treatment during the surgical repair of unilateral cleft lip (modified Millard cheiloplasty). The therapy involves injecting the PRP into the muscle and skin layers immediately after wound closure. The mechanism of action relies on the release of high concentrations of growth factors from the alpha-granules of the platelets—including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)—which accelerate wound healing, enhance tissue regeneration, and potentially improve the aesthetic outcome by reducing scar formation.
